Wendell "Oakly" Neard

Wendell "Oakly" Neard, age 76, passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at the Eastern Montana Veterans Home in Glendive, formerly of Sheridan, Wyoming. Wendell was born on December 1, 1932 in Sheridan, Wyoming, the son of Frank and Arlene (Tibbets) Neard. He was raised and educated in Sheridan, graduating with the class of 1952. Wendell joined the United States Air Force after graduation and served over seas during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge from the Air Force he returned to Sheridan where he met Erlys Hunt, they were united in marriage on June 16, 1958. Wendell and Erlys moved to Minot, North Dakota where Wendell attended Minot State University for 2 years before transferring to Ellendale Teachers College, which was a part of the University of North Dakota, where he graduated with the class of 1963. The couple moved to Sawyer, North Dakota, where Wendell had his first teaching job. Three years later they moved to Kaycee, Wyoming and remained there for the next 21 years. Before retiring, they moved to Lignite, North Dakota where he taught one more year. During his career, Wendell taught High School shop, elementary through high school P.E. and was a high school basketball coach. After retirement Wendell and Erlys moved back to Minot for nine years before moving to Glendive in 1999, where they have resided since. Wendell enjoyed wood working, painting and was an excellent finish carpenter. He had a wonderful imagination and quite the sense of humor. He was very proud of the fact that he owned one share of the Boston Celtics and was good friends with the late Chris Ledoux. He was a member of the Kaycee Lions Club for 21 years and an officer for 10 years. Mr. Neard is preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Aaron T. Jr.; one brother, J.O. and one sister, Bernice Plumb. He is survived by his wife Erlys of Glendive; one daughter, Wendy Buck and her husband Poke of Bismarck, North Dakota; one son, Aaron Neard, of Glendive; one sister, Lowene McNeese of Billings, Montana; one brother, Alvin Neard and his wife Phyllis of Sheridan; 7 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, July 14, 2022 at 2:00 pm, in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery Juniper Heights Section.
