Rubin Hauf, was called Home from this world on Friday, November 29, 2019 at his residence in Sheridan, WY.Rubin Harry Hauf was born March 16, 1931 in Clearmont, WY to to Maria (Mary) Bauer and Wilhelm Hauf. He was the ninth of twelve children born to Russian immigrants who came to the United States through Ellis Island seeking a better life. The hardworking couple and their growing family farmed around the west including Colorado, South Dakota, Wyoming and Idaho. During the winter of 1936-37, the family purchased a farm from the O4 Bar Ranch near Ranchester, WY. For over a decade the Hauf’s worked the land and raised their children with a strong work ethic and love for Wyoming. It was at this time Rubin met Betty Lucille Goodle, and they became friends.The Hauf’s farmed there until 1947 when they took their remaining children to Sheridan, living on 5th Street for a time and soon after, moving to a farm at the end of Kooi Street. Rubin and Betty Goodle grew closer, but duty called and Rubin enlisted in the US Air Force in August of 1950. During the Korean War and while stationed at Travis AFB in CA he trained as a airplane mechanic. As a result, he earned a Korean Service Medal, a UN Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. Rubin and Betty stayed in touch until he could get back home to propose to her. He did just that and they were married January 30th, 1953 in Sheridan, WY.While Rubin traveled serving his country, Betty and daughter Sheryl Lynn stayed home in Wyoming where Carrie Ann was born in 1955. Soon after, the young family pulled up stakes and relocated when Rubin was deployed to Ramey AFB in Puerto Rico. While there, another daughter Laura was born but was suddenly and tragically called Home while in her crib. The Hauf’s returned home for a short time in 1957 where Rubin Jr (Bobby) was born in Sheridan.Once again, duty called and Airman First Class Hauf and family relocated to Great Falls, MT where daughters Mary Lou and Terri Jo were born in 1963 and 1966, respectively. Around this time, the war in Vietnam was escalating and the family relocated to Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, NV. Rubin was deployed to Vietnam and served with honor in that conflict for several tours of duty. Ultimately, he returned home and retired as an enlisted airman (Technical Sergeant) and was honorably discharged in the summer of 1970.The family moved a few more times before settling in Hanna, WY where Rubin was employed at Rosebud Coal Company for the remainder of his working career. The family enjoyed being settled during that time and were active in the community during the booming coal years of Hanna. Sadly, his wife Betty passed away in 1981 and their children slowly moved away over the next few years to marry and have families of their own. In the mid 80’s, Rubin sold the Hanna home and relocated to the front range of CO with his companion Maggie Beal for the next 25 years before coming home to Sheridan in 2010.In his retirement and later years, Rubin enjoyed fishing in the lakes and creeks of the Rocky Mountains. He loved to woodwork and built many toys and hobby horses for his growing brood of grandchildren. He traveled frequently to visit friends and family around the west, and as his family grew so did the miles on his minivan.In his younger years he was known for being a tough disciplinarian and his sometimes wild ways, yet through his re-connection with Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, he softened and we watched him reflect on life with tenderness. With it all, he was loved by his family and the many friends he made over the years. In the last years of his life, he was known in Sheridan for his generosity and kindness to complete strangers. He will be missed by all.Rubin is preceded in death by his beloved mother Mary, father Wilhelm, wife Betty, siblings William Jr, Lydia, Freda, Fred, Elizabeth, Hilda, William W., Baby Hilda, and Baby Eddie. He is also preceded in death by granddaughters Shannon and Amy as well as his daughter Laura and son Bobby who passed away in Sheridan in 2009.Rubin is survived in death by his sisters Dorothy (Frank) of Buffalo, WY and Barbara (Marosok) of Greeley, CO; daughters, Sheryl (Markowicz) of East Bridgewater, MA; Carrie (Larry Legerski) of Sheridan, WY; Mary (Cabot Thomas) of West Frankfort, IL; and Terri Jo (Russell Smith) of Livingston, MT. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and his extended family and friends who will remember him fondly.The graveside service with military honors will be held on Saturday, December 7th at noon at the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Following the burial, the funeral will take place at 1:30pm, at Immanuel Lutheran Church on 5th St (across from the hospital) in Sheridan, followed by a reception and celebration of Rubin’s life.Foregoing gifts and flowers, please make donations to Martin Luther Grammar School, 1300 W 5th St., in Sheridan, in support of their youth programs.Kane Funeral Home has been entrusted with local arrangements.
