Miriam Elizabeth Welty, 92, of Sheridan, WY passed away at the Westview Health Care Center on Friday, May 24, 2024. Miriam was born on October 26, 1931 in Toledo,

Ohio to Donald Thorpe Fox and Myrtle Lulu (Vincent) Fox. Miriam had an older brother, Donald Vincent Fox. The family later moved to Pueblo, Colorado where Miriam spent most of her life. She had fond memories riding on her brother’s bicycle handle bars to school and his love of trains. Miriam learned to play the piano at the age of 3 on upright Steinway grand piano which the family still has. Playing the piano continued throughout her life. She went to St Louis to further her studies in music, piano, and teaching. She was 12 when she achieved her junior teaching piano certification, and then at 16 completed her senior teaching piano certificate.

Miriam actively participated in the 4-H club, where she honed her skills in horsemanship, home design, gardening, cooking, and embraced a love for learning, citizenship, and responsibility. Miriam raised chickens and sold eggs to pay for her college education. Miriam graduated from Pleasant View High School in 1949. She attended Colorado A & M for one year before marrying Lewis L. Welty on September 3, 1950. Lewis joined the marines and they spent the first few years of their marriage at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, California. Later Lewis and Miriam moved back to Colorado where they raised three children: Rollie, Rex, and Mary.

Miriam returned to college and finally graduated from Colorado State University in 1967 with a Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and Food. After completing her Dietetic Internship at Colorado State Hospital, Pueblo, CO in 1970, the family moved to Great Falls, Montana where Miriam worked as a Clinical Dietitian. It was in Great Falls, she joined the Christian Missionary Alliance Church. Miriam was raised with Christian values, but her love for Christ grew to a new level. Miriam deepened her faith and knowledge of the bible. Her heart was filled with joy and she wanted everyone to experience the grace of God. Miriam’s love for God reflected in all she did: talking, working, helping, mentoring, and teaching others.

In 1974, Miriam got a job at the VA Hospital in Sheridan, WY as a Clinical Dietitian. She continued in that position until she retired in 1996. Miriam, continued her time gardening, feeding and watching birds, playing and teaching piano to her grandchildren and eventually her great-grandchildren. Lewis and Miriam were married for 73 years until Lewis passed away December 28, 2023. She had 3 children – Rollie (Bev) Sheridan, WY, Rex (Laura) Banner, WY and Mary (Randy) Boulder, CO, 6 gand children, and 12 great grandchildren.

Miriam’s legacy will be remembered for touching people’s lives, love for children, teaching, hospitality, gardening, her love for hummingbirds, showing the love of Christ and her cinnamon rolls. A double Celebration of Life for Lewis and Miriam was held May 26, 2024 at the Ignite Wesleyan Church in Sheridan, WY.

Lewis and Miriam Welty’s ashes will be buried at Haskew Cemetery, Woodward, Oklahoma where Lewis will receive his military honors.
